Ghulam Dastegir Khan was born in 1946, in Delhi, from a family of Musicians.He received an early introduction to music from his father, a renowned tabla master, Late Usted Ghulam Ahmed khan , for four years.Developing a keen interest for sitar, he became a discipline of late Pandit Anil Dhar Dutt, a distinguished master of this instrument at Gandharva Mahavidyalaya. He continued his apprenticeship of the sitar under the supervision of Late Ustad Wahid Khan Sahib of Etawah, a grand master of both sitar & surbahar, at Bhartiya Kala kendra. He finally polished his mastery of classical music with late Ustad Mohammed Khan sahib from Indore , a well known beenkar master.
His musicianship and techniques are impeccable.His rhythms are sharp and brisk, he can sustain them comfortably, even in very fast and intricate sequences.His sense of melody, his interpretation skills, where musicality is always preferred to technical prowess make his art and style very special.
