He received his first award from the President of India at the age of 16. He was awarded the President¹s Gold Medal for the AIR competition in 1967. In 1969 was selected in a delegation sent by the Government of India to Afghanistan and in 1972 was invited to perform at the Munich Olympic Celebrations.
Pandit Brij Narayan's obsession with the Sarod was awakened in him at a very young age as his uncle Pandit Chatur Lal taught him the science of rhythm. He soon became a disciple of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, through which he has become a musician of the highest calibre, with a great command of tonality and the ability to visualise the poetry and innate emotion of a raag.

He has also been awarded the title of scholar by the Bharatiya Sangeet Sabha. More recently, the Dagar Gharana Award for excellence in music was conferred on him. He has been touring the continent, USA and Canada regularly for the last 20 years and has performed on many recordings. He is also Sarod player for All India Radio and the Doordarshan TV network; his concerts on various television channels have been applauded by music-lovers all over the world.
